Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is an uncommon form of
cancer and the most serious of all diseases related
to asbestos. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer in which
malignant (cancerous) cells are found in the mesothelium,
a protective sac that covers most of the body's internal
organs. Though usually found in workers associated with
the asbestos industry, both males and females of any
age groups are prone to it. However, the risk is increased
with age and occurs more in men.
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer where
the mesothelium membrane cells divide abnormally. Mesothelioma
usually begins in the pleura or peritoneum. From there,
they spread quickly to other parts of the body.
The mesothelium tumors can be benign
(noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). A cancerous
tumor of the mesothelium is called a malignant mesothelioma.
Because most mesothelial tumors are cancerous, malignant
mesothelioma is often simply called mesothelioma.
Malignant mesothelioma is divided into
3 main types: -
1. Epithelioid type
2. Sarcomata type
3. Biphasic/mixed type
Of these, the epithelioid type has the best prognosis.
The treatment options for all three types are the same.
